Phoksumdo Lake

Start of the Trip: Kathmandu
End of the Trip: Kathmandu
Duration: 3 Days
Difficulty: Medium
Hotels: Basic
Seasons: May – October
Maximum Elevation: 3730m.

The trek to Phoksumdo Lake up the Suli Gaad is a short one but boasts a lot of variety, with some lovely forested sections, dramatic Phoksumdo Lake and a tiny pocket of unusual Bonpo culture. The Phoksumdo Lake lies within Shey Phoksumdo National Park. There are interesting myths surrounding the creation of Phoksumdo Lake, according to the legends, it is believed to have been created by a female demon. From Phoksumdo Lake you can view the beautiful snow-capped peak of Sonam Kang (5916m). The park is home to snow leopards, blue ships and a few other endangered species. The trail is usually snow bound between mid – November to mid- May. This trek begins from Dunai, which you can reach by flying from Jhupal then trek all the way to Dunai (takes about 3 hours). Alternatively choose a much longer but rewarding alternative 12 Day Beni to Dolpo trek. The accommodations and foodings are very basic around the region, and there are a few campsites. On this trip you can pay a visit to Tapriza Cultural School which is fifteen-minute walk from Sumduwa. Here, Tibetan and English languages are taught and Bon religion is taught as well. You will also have more opportunity to learn more about Bon culture by visiting the Thasung Chholing Gompa, which enshrines Bon deities.
