Trekking enthusiasts often trek to Gokyo to escape the ever jam-packed Everest Base Camp trek route. The Gokyo trek provides equally panoramic views of Everest and surrounding mountains as the Everest trek. The trail coincides with the Everest Base Camp route until Sanasa, and then trails towards west to Gokyo village. Along the trail you will head towards the source of Dudh Koshi, past the spectacular five green emerald colored sacred lakes along the moraine of Ngozumpa. Though the accommodations and food are much basic, the opportunity of commune with nature is much more profound here. Passing the Sherpa village of from Namche Bazaar to Phortse Thenga keep an eye for Khumbila (5761), a sacred mountain for the Sherpas. Although the ascent to Gokyo can be made much faster, due to the risk altitude sickness acclimatization days are mandatory. Gokyo village is squeezed between a wall of a moraine and the lake, which is backed by a basin of fang-like peak. In the absence of wind, you can see a clear reflection of the mountains on the lakes of Gokyo. Gokyo Ri is like Kala Pattar of Gorak Shep; take a side trip to Gokyo Ri to get the best views of the Everest, and surrounding mountains. Alternatively, choose to take a side trip to the spectacular green emerald sacred lakes – Thonak Tsho, Ngozumpa Tsho, Gyanzumba Tsho and others.

Side Trips

Day 3 & 4: Acclimatization Day at Namche

  • Thame (600m ascent. 600m descent) 6 – 7.00 hrs

Thame (3750m) is a secluded village, set among the alpine meadows beneath the mountain wall of Kongde Ri. From Namche, the trail runs west towards Tesi Lapcha, the 5775m pass leading towards the Renjo La (5345m) and the Nangpa La (5716m) to Tibet.

  • Sherpa Villages of Khumbu (460m ascent, 460m descent) 4 – 5.00 hrs

Another rewarding acclimatization trek is the full-day circuit through Syangboche (3790m), Khunde (3849m) and Khumjung (3780m) and back to Namche.
Day8: Acclimatize at Chhukung

Day 9 Side Trips: Gokyo and Around

  • Gokyo Ri (4 hours return, 570m ascent and 570m descent)

As Kala Pattar is to Everest, so is Gokyo to Gokyo Ri. Gokyo is a tiny dot on the side of the moraine, and the Dudh Pokhari is a giant puddle, without a single reflection on its mirror-flat surface. The 5360m high hill on the north side of the Dudh Pokhari is an epic vantage point, offering the kind of view over Everest that is normally reserved for balloonists or mountaineers. From the summit, there are panoramic views of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse and Tacboche.

  • The Sacred Lakes (5 hours return, 200m ascent and 200m descent)

The six languid pools that surround Gokyo are the source of the river you have followed since Lukla, the lake is sacred both to Hindus and Buddhists. The first lake you will come across is Thomak Tsho (4870m), a steely grey pool surrounded by enormous boulders and patches of ice. The trail climbs the hill on the north shore and runs level along the moraine to the fifth lake, Ngozumpa Tsho (4980m). On this trip you will be coming across Ngozumpa glacier and will also visit Scoundrel’s viewpoint from where you can enjoy great views of the north face of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu. In order to see the sixth lake, Gyazumba Tsho (5419m), you are required to camp since it is impractical to trek all the way in one day.

Alternative Routes

From Day 12 & 13 follow the The Ultimate Everest Experience (Three Passes) trail

If you wish to link the Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Treks, you must cross over the 5420m Cho La pass. Along the Chola Pass you can get spectacular views of the Ama Dablam (6856m.). Spend the overnight at Tagnag (4700m) before heading towards Lobuche via Dzonghla (4830m). On days 10 & 11 trek to Gorak Shep, Base Camp and Kala Pattar, then return back to Lobuche. On the following day, trek from Lobuche to Chhukung over Kongma La. Spend a day to rest at Chhukung before embarking on another seven days of adventurous trek to Lukla.
