Start of the Trip: Kathmandu
End of the Trip: Kathmandu
Duration: 22 Days
Seasons: October to November and March to May
Maximum Elevation: 5535m
The Three Passes trek combines the Everest Base Camp Circuit, Gokyo Circuit and a trekking circuit along the lower Khumbu region. This trek stands as a test even for the experienced trekkers, because even though the trail is easy, the entire trail climbs above 5000m. To make acclimatization much easier you will trail from east to west. Trekking equipment such as ropes, axes, and crampons are not usually required. You will be visiting the famous Namche Bazaar, set in horseshoe – shaped natural amphitheatre facing the splendid Himalayas. Namche Bazaar is also the main trade and administrative centre for the entire Solukhumbu region. There are trek shops, bakeries, pharmaceuticals, hotels with hot shower, pool halls, massage centre, post office, money exchange, bank, ATM, and many other services are available here. If you wish to, you can also climb the Island peak, but special permits are required. The Island peak is also one of the easiest peaks to climb. One of the highlights of this trip is Chhorkung Ri, where you can enjoy splendid views of the mountains.
Ngozumpa Glacier, Longponga Tsho, Taboche Tsho, Gorak Shep, Kala Pattar, Gokyo, Chhukung Ri, Island Peak and Dudh Pokhari.

Departure from Kathmandu
*** The trail to this expedition ends at Lukla; you may choose to fly to Kathamandu or continue trekking from Lukla to Jiri or Shivalaya, and board bus from there to Kathmandu Valley.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Namche
- Thame (600m ascent. 600m descent) 6 – 7.00 hrs
Thame (3750m) is a secluded village, set among the alpine meadows beneath the mountain wall of Kongde Ri. From Namche, the trail runs west towards Tesi Lapcha, the 5775m pass leading towards the Renjo La (5345m) and the Nangpa La (5716m) to Tibet.
- Sherpa Villages of Khumbu (460m ascent, 460m descent) 4 – 5.00 hrs
Another rewarding acclimatization trek is the full-day circuit through Syangboche (3790m), Khunde (3849m) and Khumjung (3780m) and back to Namche.
Day8: Acclimatize at Chhukung
Day 8: Acclimatize at Chhukung
- Chhukung Ri (490m ascent, 490m descent, 5 - 6 hrs)
A more strenuous acclimatization trek is the full day trek to Chhukung at the head of the Imja Valley. The views are stupendous even by Khumbu standards. This trek forms part of the approach to Island Peak, one of Nepal’s most popular trekking peaks.
Day 14 &15 Gokyo and Around
- Gokyo Ri (4 hours return, 570m ascent and 570m descent)
As Kala Pattar is to Everest, so is Gokyo to Gokyo Ri. Gokyo is a tiny dot on the side of the moraine, and the Dudh Pokhari is a giant puddle, without a single reflection on its mirror-flat surface. The 5360m high hill on the north side of the Dudh Pokhari is an epic vantage point, offering the kind of view over Everest that is normally reserved for balloonists or mountaineers. From the summit, there are panoramic views of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse and Tacboche.
- The Sacred Lakes (5 hours return, 200m ascent and 200m descent)
The six languid pools that surround Gokyo are the source of the river you have followed since Lukla, the lake is sacred both to Hindus and Buddhists. The first lake you will come across is Thomak Tsho (4870m), a steely grey pool surrounded by enormous boulders and patches of ice. The trail climbs the hill on the north shore and runs level along the moraine to the fifth lake, Ngozumpa Tsho (4980m). On this trip you will be coming across Ngozumpa glacier and will also visit Scoundrel’s viewpoint from where you can enjoy great views of the north face of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu. In order to see the sixth lake, Gyazumba Tsho (5419m), you are required to camp since it is impractical to trek in one day.
